Give support in the fight against cancer
For many people, supporting someone they love during the hard fight against cancer is something truly meaningful, since usually having family support is the only way they can face that difficult reality.
When first receiving the news of a breast cancer diagnosis, it’s very difficult and shocking, and many times one does not know how to act, and this question may come to mind, “How can I help?”.
There is no to-do list that tells us how exactly we should give support to that person, but we can have ideas to help orientate ourselves in a more appropriate and healthy way.
It is very different when supporting a friend which whom they’ll generally have his or her’s own family as a support network, but when it is a relative of yours, the picture changes.
Either way, the support you give will always be thanked by the person with cancer because with all the treatments going on, it is also very important to take care of the mind and the best help for that is having a team for emotional stability.
Did you know that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer, with more than 2.2 million cases in 2020?
Actions with which you can help a cancer patient
Here are some suggestions to consider to help someone going through cancer treatment:
Help with housework
Remember that the cleanliness and order of the home do not affect the patients’ treatment, but it is very necessary for your own mental well-being and that of your relative in treatment.
During those harsh times, the least of the patient’s worry is the state of their home so it’s vital that you, as a loved one, take care of it and help them because unconsciously it’s vital emotionally
Proactive attitude
Support the person with cancer by accompanying them to medical appointments, purchasing medications, and food supplies, helping with recreational activities or simply keeping them company at home.
The most important thing here is that the person feels your unconditional support in these difficult times. But remember to keep in mind the person’s feelings, so it’s key to always as if your help is required in that moment.
Emotional support
By proactively listening to the patient, because during these times it’s when they’re most sensitive. So they rely on you to help them emotionally during this difficult process.
These people need to be heard and not judged for their emotional lability.
Note to self that you must have empathy for the pain of others, and understand that not all of us face situations in the same way.
Maintain a proper and healthy communication
Give your loved one who is facing those difficult times enough confidence and make them feel at ease so they can feel free to communicate you their thoughts, feelings, and needs that arise in the process
It is very beneficial for both the patient and the support provider to establish adequate and assertive communication. In this way, the integrity of both people will not be damaged.
Respect privacy
We must bear in mind that, even if we are very close to the person with cancer, and have access to information about their health status or their personal things, we must not disclose information without their permission for any reason.
You’ll be showing empathy and respect for their difficult situation and their decisions.
The most important thing of all is that the person who is in this fight feels heard; respected in their decisions, thoughts and feelings; that they have someone who is willing to help and support them throughout the process, and more so in the critical moments they may experience.
