Today we know that technology and the virtual learning are more within our reach and that we have left behind the days when it was unknown or very few had access to it. The new generations are growing up surrounded by it and that it has been easier for them to integrate it into their daily lives, we can say that it is now part of life.
Today, more than ever, with the situation we are living immersed in the development of a pandemic, technology has become indispensable and even more so when we focus on the issue of education and the return to school, that is where we hear most often about virtual learning.
Parents have a very important role in the process of teaching and learning of their children, but today they are one of the primary entities since they have acquired a major part of the role of the teacher, since they are the ones who guide and support their children at all times in the realization of school activities that take place entirely at home.
This can be a bit stressful, since it adds a task to the daily responsibilities which requires more time and effort, not only for parents but also for the child himself, it is not the same to sit in front of the computer and see their peers through a screen to live daily with them. So, it is no wonder that the process of adjusting to this “new normal” can be difficult and frustrating for both parties at home.
We must consider that the adaptation process is not the same in all children, as well as the learning process, we must be attentive and adapt both the environment and the routines and schedules, and find the skills that the child must make the process easier and less frustrating.
To make this return to class a new experience full of enthusiasm and positive attitude, we can consider some tips or recommendations that will be of great help in this process of virtual learning and take advantage of the time we share with our children:
1. Create a space as a place of study.
It is important to choose a place within the home, where there is the least amount of distractions, quiet and illuminated, which is dedicated specially to study. A fantastic idea is to create a pleasant atmosphere, that is to say, to ask the child to help organize and arrange the desk, notebooks, books, pencils and all the study material that is necessary to develop their school activities, even choosing their favorite chair with which they feel comfortable when using it. Perfect time to motivate the child in this new adventure.
2. Establish work and rest schedules.
Organization is especially important and what better than to do it from home, try to follow the school schedule with which the child previously worked. Also, to set up rest schedules, since according to the age the child has a time of attention which we must respect for a better performance avoiding falling in the frustration and counterproductive emotions for the adaptation.
We must not forget to help the child establish a routine or habits which include the schedule for sleeping, getting up, taking a bath, dressing and eating, we must not overlook it so that learning, attention and concentration are optimal, the child must sleep what is necessary and eat healthy, added to this physical activities within the home.
3. Reduce or avoid distractions.
When the child is handling the electronic device, he or she should focus on the activity set up at that time, classes and homework, avoid having games, open social networks and disable notifications which are potential distractions to the child’s attention and concentration.
Also, avoid listening to music, having televisions nearby or family members themselves generating noise or distractions for the child.
4. Proper use of the electronic device.
That is, that the child uses the device properly, respecting the schedule of activities and time of use. It does not mean that the child will spend all day in front of the device and do other activities such as eating and resting, all at the right time and all at the right place.
5. Lead by example.
Children learn through observation, that it is better for them to be accompanied by an adult and to have time to sit with him or her, showing interest and willingness to pay attention to the teachers’ indications about the activities to be carried out.
Despite the difficulties, it is time to take advantage of and share a little more time with the children of the home, to help develop other skills in them, to give them time and quality care. It is time to give the opportunity to virtual learning and get other benefits from this modality.
